10 Dinosaur STEM Activities for Kids Ages 5-10 (No Printer Needed)

These ten dinosaur-themed science activities use household materials and plain paper, so you can start in the next five minutes.

Why these activities skip the printer

Most "printable" STEM activity searches are really a search for something else: activities that require zero prep and start fast. A printer that's out of ink defeats the purpose just as much as a shopping list. Every activity below uses things already in most homes or classrooms (paper, pasta, a cup, tape) and can start in the next five minutes. If you want a paper reference, jot the steps on an index card. That's the only "printing" required.

Each activity names the real science concept behind it, so it's not just a craft. Ages 5-7 can do the simpler versions with help; ages 8-10 can run most of these independently.

1. Fossil dig in a cup

Bury small plastic dinosaurs or dinosaur-shaped crackers in a cup of dry rice, sand, or coffee grounds. Give kids a spoon, a toothpick, and a small paintbrush. Have them excavate slowly, brushing away material instead of digging fast. This mirrors how real paleontologists work at a dig site, removing material in thin layers so they don't damage a fossil. Ask kids to describe what tool worked best for which layer.

2. Dinosaur footprint measuring

Trace a few dinosaur footprint shapes on paper (freehand ovals with three toe marks work fine), or use a real shoe as a stand-in "print." Have kids measure the print length with a ruler or string, then use the classic paleontology rule of thumb that hip height is roughly four times footprint length to estimate how tall that dinosaur might have stood. This turns a measuring exercise into an estimation problem, which is a real skill scientists use when only partial evidence survives.

3. Baking soda volcano, with a purpose

The classic vinegar-and-baking-soda eruption gets more interesting when it's tied to a specific event: the volcanic activity linked to the End-Permian extinction, long before the dinosaurs even existed, or the asteroid impact and resulting debris that ended the age of dinosaurs 66 million years ago. Build a small volcano shape from clay or a paper cone, load the "crater" with two spoons of baking soda, and add vinegar with a few drops of dish soap for a foamier reaction. While it erupts, ask what might happen to plants, air, and sunlight after a big eruption or impact.

4. Sink or float dinosaur eggs

Fill a bowl with water. Use golf balls, plastic eggs, or hard-boiled eggs as stand-ins for dinosaur eggs, and have kids predict which will float before testing. Then add salt a tablespoon at a time to the water and retest. This demonstrates density and buoyancy directly: salt water is denser than fresh water, so objects float more easily in it. Real dinosaur eggs, being porous and calcified, is a fact kids find satisfying once they've handled a modern egg and made the comparison themselves.

5. Build a skeleton from pasta

Give kids a pile of dried pasta shapes (rigatoni for leg bones, penne for ribs, small shells for vertebrae) and tape or glue. Have them arrange the pieces into a simple dinosaur skeleton shape on paper. This is a genuine engineering task: they have to figure out proportion and joint placement, not just glue pasta randomly. Ask which bones need to be thickest to hold up the body, which introduces the idea of load-bearing structure.

6. Teeth sorting: herbivore or carnivore

Draw a two-column chart on any sheet of paper labeled "Flat and Ridged" and "Sharp and Curved." Have kids look at pictures of dinosaur skulls (or just describe teeth shapes you name aloud) and sort them into columns, then guess whether that dinosaur ate plants or meat. Flat, ridged teeth grind plant material; sharp, curved teeth tear flesh. This is the same logic paleontologists use to infer diet from fossilized teeth when no other evidence survives.

7. A hand-drawn geologic timeline

Take a long strip of paper or a length of string and mark it off in even sections representing millions of years. Place the three dinosaur periods (Triassic, Jurassic, Cretaceous) in order, then mark where humans would appear if the whole line represented Earth's history. Most kids are startled to see how thin that last sliver is. This activity builds real number sense about scale, which is one of the harder ideas in earth science.

8. Center of gravity with a paper Stegosaurus

Cut a simple dinosaur body shape from cardboard or thick paper. Try to balance it on one finger. Then add two small binder clips to represent stegosaurus plates along the back and try again. Ask kids to predict, then test, where the balance point moves. This is a hands-on introduction to center of mass, using a body shape kids already find interesting.

9. Leaf and bark rubbings as "fossil impressions"

Real fossils often form as impressions in rock, not preserved bone. Collect leaves or find textured bark, place a sheet of paper over them, and rub a crayon sideways across the surface. The pattern that appears is a direct, physical demonstration of how an impression fossil captures shape and texture without capturing the original material itself. Compare a leaf rubbing to a photo of a real fossil leaf impression if you have one handy.

10. Extinction event simulation

Spread a thin, even layer of flour in a shallow tray. Drop marbles or small rocks from different heights and measure the size of the crater and the spread of the flour "debris cloud" around it. Higher drops make bigger craters and wider debris patterns, similar to how impact size relates to debris and dust thrown into the atmosphere after the asteroid impact linked to the extinction of non-avian dinosaurs. This activity turns an abstract historical event into something kids can measure and compare.

Making this a regular routine

None of these activities need special supplies, a printer, or advance planning beyond gathering what's already in a kitchen drawer or recycling bin. Rotate one per week and kids start building real vocabulary around fossils, geologic time, and basic physics without it feeling like a worksheet.
